There’s a growing number of post-secondary schools and community colleges that offer CNA training courses. Even some high schools offer nursing assistant career pathways for students. This is mostly because of the career prospects in the healthcare industry are quite promising. Employment opportunities for CNAs are on the rise, especially in the coming years. The nursing assistant is already one of the most common entry-level jobs in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan communities.
But in Fort Collins, there are only 1,340 nursing assistants. This was in May 2016. According to the 2015 census, Fort Collins’ population was 161,175. It is the fourth most populous city in the state of Colorado. But there isn’t an imminent need for CNAs in Fort Collins as the city’s population is fairly young. The median age is only 28 with only 7.9 percent of the population aged 65 and above. But the trend in CNA employment would continue to rise, if not by much in Fort Collins. The state of Colorado, in general, doesn’t have a high employment quotient for nursing assistants. There are only 19,230 nursing assistants in Colorado in May 2016. Nearby states even have lower numbers.
The lack of demand from the younger population doesn’t mean that taking CNA training is useless. CNA training is but a stepping stone to further career advancements and higher education pursuits. The training can also lead to higher-paying career paths in nursing like Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Registered Nurse (RN).
Front Range Community College Larimer Campus – Medical Careers Exploration
Front Range Community College (FRCC) in Larimer caters to more than 8,400 students each year. About three-quarters of these students are enrolled in the college part-time. FRCC’s concurrent enrollment program, College Now, enables high school students to earn college credits. High school students can also avail of eight CTE programs designed just for them through Career Pathways.
One of these Career Pathways is the Medical Careers Exploration program. This program prepares high school students for careers in healthcare. Among these career options EMT, physical therapist, nurse, nurse aide and many more. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn a certificate on dementia care, Healthcare Provider CPR & First Aid, and an FRCC Nurse Aide Certificate (they should complete the certificate program admission requirements to qualify for the certificate). They will also be qualified to sit on the CNA state certification exam.
Classes are held Monday to Friday on FRCC’s Larimer Campus (for students in the Poudre School District). Students can choose between a morning (8:00 – 10:00 a.m.) or an afternoon (12:30 – 2:30 p.m.) schedule. The program length is one semester and opened for juniors and seniors only.
The school district will shoulder the tuition fee for the program. There are expenses that students need to pay out of pocket including immunizations, TB tests, background check, and the fees for the state certification exam. The school district will also provide the necessary transportation but only to FRCC Larimer’s main campus. Students need to shoulder transportation costs and arrangements for classes filed trips, internships, and instruction in FRCC’s Community Learning Center.

Geriatric Education Centre, LLC
The Geriatric Education Centre is a subsidiary of the Columbine Health Systems. Columbine had been around since 1971. The locally-owned health system provides senior care solutions. Columbine provides in-home care, independent living, assisted living, rehabilitation, and medical equipment.
The Geriatric Education program provides CNA, clinical experience, and Personal Care Provider training. The CNA training curriculum includes topics on nursing assistant skills and procedures, restorative care, housekeeping, patient care and safety, emergency care, patient rights, mental health issues, and patient interactions. Students also learn to work with patients of all ages and health conditions.
There would be classroom lecture, laboratory practice (extended hours are available), and clinical experience. Four class options are available: full-time day classes, part-time evening classes, part-time weekend classes, and half-day classes. Full-time day classes meet Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The part-time evening classes meet on Monday to Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The evening classes run for nine weeks. The weekend part-time classes meet Fridays and Saturdays for nine consecutive sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Half-day classes meet on different days from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for nine weeks. There will be a two and a half days of clinical experience for all class options.
Applicants must follow the enrollment checklist provided on the CNA training page. Enrollment opens about three months before classes begin. Seats are limited and the completion of requirements isn’t an assurance of a seat.
The program costs $880. Registration and payment are done through RegOnline. Additional costs include a $60 textbook (can be purchased outside of the facility), background check, and a $123 state certification exam fee (paid to the Colorado State Board of Nursing).
Graduates who get hired to work on any of Columbine’s facilities can avail of tuition reimbursements.
