Most often, the clinical experience that CNA training program students receive is gained at a long-term care facility. The skills and knowledge that CNAs receive in training are always in demand in these facilities. They often serve as the facility residents’ main caregiver. They assist residents in their activities of daily living (ADL), clean after them, check their vital signs, check and replenish supplies, ensure that medical equipment is functioning, and many more.
This means that CNAs should have enough strength and stamina to assist in positioning, transferring, and ambulating residents. CNAs also need to use proper body mechanics so as to avoid injury. Another aspect of a CNA’s job in long-term care facilities is communicating not only verbally, but also non-verbally. High levels of communication are required within healthcare teams especially with urgent matters concerning the resident’s condition.

Santa Rosa Junior College
2018 marks Santa Rosa Junior College’s centennial anniversary. Also known as SRJC, the college provides quality education and comprehensive student services. SRJC has close links with the community, ensuring that there are no barriers to education access. At present, SRJC caters to about 28,000 students per semester.
SRJC’s Health Sciences department offers more than a dozen health programs. The Certified Nurse Assistant Program is offered during spring, summer, and fall terms. The program duration is 10 weeks. Classes are three to four times a week for a total of 226 clock hours. The program is for six academic units so it will require at least 12 hours of instruction per week whether it be lecture, laboratory or clinical practice.
Clinical experience will be held at a long-term care facility in the local area. Students are required to have at least a “C” grade in order to successfully complete the program. Students are awarded an Acknowledgment of Completion upon completion and fulfillment of program requirements.
SRJC uses Nursing Assistant Training Program (NATP) technical standards as a qualification model for applicants. They should be able to do certain tasks that require English literacy, cognitive skills, communications skills, social skills, emotional stability, physical strength, and psychomotor functions. Students especially need to prove that they are intellectually and physically ready to perform challenging work in different settings.
The program costs around $700-800. This already includes the tuition fee, books, uniforms, evaluation fees, laboratory kit and miscellaneous fees.

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross offers training and certification programs. These programs are designed to be comprehensive, simple, and easy through options of a classroom, hybrid, and online classes. All training programs incorporate all the latest emergency practices in the US – emergency preparedness being the core of American Red Cross. Aside from the CDPH – L&C approval, all of American Red Cross’s certificate training are OSHA compliant.
Red Cross had been facilitating CNA classes for about 30 years. Their program has two components: NAT Program Part 1 (Theory/Lab) and the NAT Program Part 2 (Clinical). Topics included in the curriculum are CPR/First Aid/AED, infection control, vital signs, motion exercises, communication and teamwork, caregiving, and workplace safety.
The program duration is four to eight weeks. Classes are during weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (class end times may vary). Class sizes are small and hybrid classes may not be available in some cities. Admission requirements include a high school diploma, GED certificate or equivalent (applicants can also complete an assessment test if they haven’t completed high school level education), a Red Cross criminal background check, complete a Red Cross physical form, and a TB test. Some of these requirements may not be necessary or there could be additional requirements in specific cities. Check the CNA state regulations and state requirements beforehand.
The program costs $1,500. This includes a $250 non-refundable application fee, the tuition fee, background check, live scan fingerprinting, assessment test, textbook, and the CPR/First Aid/AED training course. Students need to shoulder other expenses that may include a physical exam ($25-75), TB test ($5-50), uniform ($20-30), shoes ($20-50), watch with a second hand ($20-30), and the CEP test ($105-120).
